Dr. Amos Ron
CV
I have earned my PhD in Cultural Geography at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. My research interests are in three main areas of enquiry: tourism & leisure studies, cultural geography and geography of religion. My interests in tourism & leisure research focus on human-cultural aspects, especially spiritual and religious tourism, pilgrimage, heritage tourism, sacred site management, culinary tourism and the sociology of tourism and leisure.
My researches in cultural geography focus on landscape interpretation, spatial commemoration and the relationship between landscape and identity. My research in geography of religion focuses on the management of sacred cities, the spatial aspects of pilgrimage sites and places, and on religious themed environments.
In the field of religious tourism and pilgrimage I take advantage of my 30 years’ experience in guiding Christian pilgrims through the Holy Land, and most likely a significant part of my future research agenda will be in the field of contemporary Christian travel.
My research orientation in cultural geography emphasizes the interpretative approach, which regards the cultural landscape as a text - reflecting and shaping human societies. According to this approach, there are relations between socio-cultural systems and the landscapes that develop in specific societies.
My researches in cultural geography focus on spatial commemoration and the relationship between landscape and identity. In all areas of research my work tends to be more qualitative than quantitative, although, it is my view that a good research integrates both approaches.
